SPHEROTOX

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action

Spherotox is an acronym of "Warming Impacts on Estrogenic and Progestagenic Endocrine Disruptors Effects in Fish Liver - A Proof of Concept Study Using Single- and Novel Multi-Cell 3D Cultures of the European Native Brown Trout", a research project funded by European Commission under a number 101038087. It is individual fellowship which grants funds for Dr. Bozidar Raskovic (University of Belgrade, Serbia) to conduct a one year research project at School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences - ICBAS (University of Porto, Portugal). The project started in October 2021 and finished in November 2022.

Project highlights

The research is done using liver of brown trout as an experimental model.

Liver cells are isolated and hundreds of spheroids are assembled. Spheroids are ball-like structures which resembles of small artificial livers.

Spheroids are exposed to three different hormones (estrogen, levonorgestrel and megestrol-acetate) to study effects on spheroids.

Laboratory

Spheroids are exposed to hormones on two temperatures to test global warming scenario.

Effects were studied using gene expression assays, biochemical analysis of viability, light microscopy (morphology/immunohistochemistry), Raman spectroscopy and biometry.
